Introduction

Master of Science in Telecommunications Engineering (MS. Tel. Engg.) was introduced and approved by the UGC in 2005 in the Department of ECE under the Faculty of Science and Engineering (SSE) at UITS. The objective of this 36+ credit hour MS. Tel. Engg. program is to provide graduate Engineers with discipline-specific knowledge and technical skills in advanced telecommunications engineering, to develop them to become efficient and skilled engineers in communication engineering, telecommunications, networking, computers and information technology. The graduates will be able to analyze, design, implement, maintain and manage the telecommunication systems and business in telecom sectors. The program is highly recommended for the students who wish to obtain technical as well as engineering management positions in the telecommunication industries. In this course, the students will complete the core subjects in professional communications and engineering workplace practice, innovation and design, advanced laboratory, and research methods. This course delivers expert skills and applied competencies required for a professional engineer in the field of telecommunication. It is designed to train and enhance professional practice, advance technical and specialist skills, and provide an opportunity to put theory into practice with applied projects and research. The degree also delivers communication, strategic and project management skills essential to the practicing engineer.

3. Admission Requirements of the Program

Candidates having Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in the following fields with minimum 2nd class or CGPA 2.0 or equivalent are eligible to apply for the M. Sc. in Telecommunication Engineering program:

  • Electronics and Communication Engineering,

  • Applied Physics & Electronics (or similar subjects).

4. Degree Requirements

A degree of Master of Science in Telecommunications Engineering (MS. Tel. Engg.) under the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) may be awarded to a student if he/she applies for it and he/she completes minimum 60 credit-hours of courses including successful completion of a research-based thesis that has publishable content. It is strongly recommended that the students should produce a publishable research work to obtain the degree in MS. Tel. Engg. However, up to 24 credits can be waived for a student who has completed his/her bachelor of science (B.Sc.) degree from the courses listed in Section 4 with acceptable good grades. The maximum number of credits waived for a student may depend on the grades of the corresponding subjects. For the degree of MS. Tel. Engg., the candidate must achieve a minimum CGPA of 2.50 on 4.0 scale. A detail of academic requirements and regulations are given as follows:

  1. The minimum duration of the MS. Tel. Engg. course shall normally be of two (02) semesters of six (06) months each. A candidate for the MS. Tel. Engg. must complete all the requirements for the degree within five academic years (session) from the date of the first admission in the respective program.
  2. Academic progress shall be measured in terms of credit-hours earned by a student. One credit-hour subject shall normally require one hour of class attendance per week for one semester of six (06) months. The number of credit-hours for each subject shall be as specified in the syllabus.

5. Curriculum Structure and Course Duration:

Students having B.Sc. degree in above mentioned disciplines can pursue the postgraduate program of MS. Tel. Engg. in the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) at UITS. Depending on the educational background, the duration of this program can be of one-year and two-years with 36 and 60 credit-hours, respectively. In case of two-years MS. Tel. Engg. program, the pre-requisite courses will be covered during first two semesters of the program. Students who have completed a similar course (only applicable to 1st year courses of MS. Tel. Engg. program) with a minimum grade of C from a recognized university or institution may apply for a waiver subject to the approval of the Academic Committee of the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering and Admission Committee of the University. In case of any doubt, the Admission Committee may ask the student to sit for a written examination on the courses to be waived.

6. Curriculum Structure

For the degree of two-year based MS. Tel. Engg. program, a student has to take a minimum of fourteen (14) courses of which at least eight (08) courses are from his/her assigned field and remaining six (06) courses are from the interdisciplinary group or any other fields. For the degree of one-year based MS. Tel. Engg. program, a student has to take a minimum of six (06) courses. However, irrespective of the duration of the program, all the students pursuing a research-based MS. Tel. Engg. program must complete an eighteen (18) credits research-based thesis. The topic of the research-based thesis for MS. Tel. Engg. must be related to field of the student or the interdisciplinary group.

8. Dissertation Information

Student may contact with supervisors directly for more details about the dissertation or self-proposed dissertation. If both the supervisor and student agree to work on a given dissertation, the student should complete and return a prescribed application form for dissertation. The dissertation may last for a semester (six-months) or slightly longer for a one-year based MS. Tel. Engg. program or two semesters (twelve months) or slightly longer for two-year based MS. Tel. Engg. degree. For submission of the final dissertation, the students are required to submit two hardcopies to the department for correction and verification. Moreover, it is required to give an oral presentation at the end of the dissertation for assessment. Please note that the research-based thesis should contain publishable material in a peer-reviewed international journal (Internationally peer-reviewed journals and conferences). It is expected that a student should produce publishable content that can be published in at least 01 (one) article in international journal or 03 (three) conference papers in the country or abroad. In case of project report (thesis), two examiners will evaluate the thesis separately. Upon getting favorable opinion from both the examiners, a viva will be arranged by the respective department in presence of the examiners. Finally, grading on the thesis will be obtained by adding the average marks given by the examiners with the marks obtained in the viva.

M.Sc. in Computer Science & Engineering:

The Department of Computer Science & Engineering offers Masters of Science (M.Sc.) and  Masters of Engineering (M.Engg.) degree program for prospective graduate students.

The Master of Engineering is designed for students who pursue to join the engineering profession following graduation to head start a career. This accelerated program is designed to develop professional engineering leaders of the future who can integrate economically, and social values of technology to cope with the challenges of 21st Century.

Guideline: Academic Requirements and Academic Regulations:

The minimum duration of the M. Sc. Engg. / M. Engg. Course shall normally span over three semesters (six months each). A candidate pursues for the Master’s degree must fulfill all the requirements for the degree within the duration of maximum five academic years (session) from the date of the first admission in the respective program.

Academic progress shall be ensured regarding credit hours achieved by a student. One credit hour subject shall normally be equivalent to one hour long of class presence per week for the semester concerned. The one credit hour of thesis/project/laboratory should ensure three hours of work per week for the concerned semester. The syllabus should precisely specify the number of credit hours for each subject.

The university will create opportunities for the  full-time students and part-time students. Students, serving in different organizations, maybe admitted as part-time students with written consent of the employer. A part-time student may be assigned a maximum of 9 credit hours of course including thesis/project work in any semester.

Full-time students must register for a minimum of 12 credit hours and a maximum of 15 credit hours per semester. A full-time student shall not be allowed to be in the employment of any organization (even as a part-time employee). However, they may be employed as teaching / research assistant at the University. If a full-time student becomes an employee (full-time or part-time) of any other organization in the middle of a semester, he may, with the approval of the Head of the department and his employer, be allowed to continue as a full time student for that semester.

The courses of study are recommended by the Department of CSE, UITS, and Faculty and approved by the Academic Council. The Department of CSE, UITS may review the curriculum from time to time and recommend any changes as may be considered necessary. The courses to be offered in any semester shall also be as determined by the academic committee of the Department of CSE, UITS.

A student on recommendation of the Department of CSE and as approved by the Faculty of Engineering, UITS may be allowed a transfer of credits of the courses completed by the student at a recognized institution provided that the courses were not taken earlier than five calendar years from the date of his first enrollment in the respective program at UITS and that the student obtained a minimum GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0 or its equivalent and that the courses are equivalent to the approved courses of UITS.

Course Structure / Distribution:

For admission to the courses leading to a degree of M. Sc. Engg., a student must earn a minimum of 36 credit hours including a thesis for which 18 credit hours shall be assigned. The courses will be offered keeping in mind for the students who have obtained B.Sc. Engg. Degree in CSE from any recognized institution.

For admission to the courses leading to a degree of M. Engg., a student must earn a minimum of 36 credit hours including a project for which 6 credit hours shall be assigned. An applicant with a B.Sc. Engg. degree in other branches of engineering who have strong technical background may also be eligible for admission to the courses leading to the degree of M. Engg.

UITS is more of a “learning institution” than a mere “teaching institution”.  It is not a “teaching shop”; obviously the focus is more on knowledge than mere skills.  The faculty are individuals who are deep researchers qualified to write and critique contemporary textbooks in the area they reach; obviously they do not teach to a “fixed syllabus”.  They “design” the courses taking into account current trends and the student background so as to blend what is collectively taught across different courses into a cohesive body of knowledge that prepares the students not just for today but to take on the developments that are likely to take place years ahead.  What is laid in the courses is a solid foundation that prepares the individual student to pursue academic or industrial career with rigor and innovation.  The lectures are supplemented by several Lab sessions, Tutorials and self-reading (both individually and in groups) as well as projects.  It is not sufficient to pick up what is taught in the class or written in the textbooks; it is important to understand, assimilate and demonstrate the individual and collective ability to apply the knowledge to a research/application environment.  This is what sets apart UITS from the rest of the institutions.

  1. Admission Requirements:

Admission to the LLM program is selective. To apply for admission in this program, applicants must have LLB (Honours) degree with minimum GPA 2.00 from any recognized university. The applicants must fulfill all the educational qualifications required for LLB (Honours) degree as per the rules of University Grants Commission of Bangladesh (UGC).

  1. Admission Criteria:

          The Applicant must pass the admission test arranged by the University.

Participants are expected to complete the LLM degree in 1 (one) academic years consisting of 2 (two) semesters. The Maximum course load for LLM student is 16 –18 credits hours in a semester. A student shall have to complete the programme within a maximum period of 3 (three) academic years from the admission year.

  1. Course Curriculum:

A student would be awarded LLM degree after completion of 1 (one) academic year earning 34 credits in 2 (two) semesters with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.50. In each semester not more than four courses shall be offered and each course will carry 100 marks. As an integrated programme, it carries 850 marks and 34 credit points. The viva-voce is compulsory for all at the end of the second semester and will take place after completion of written examinations. The medium of instruction shall be English and/or Bangla.

  1. Course Designation System:

Each Course is designated by three letters and four digits.

  • The three letters represent the name of the discipline to which the subject belongs or the department that offers the course. The abbreviations are as under:
  • LAW Master of Laws
  • The first digit corresponds to the year in which the course is offered.
  • 5 Corresponds for Semester 1 & 2
  • The second digit corresponds to the semester of the year.
  • The third and fourth digit identifies the specific course within the department.
  1. Marks Distribution:

The performance of a student in the course is evaluated on the basis of a schedule of continuous assessment. The distribution of marks for a course is as follows-

Total = 100%

Marks allocated for continuous assessment shall be distributed as follows:

Two Mid-Semester Examination (10% + 10%) = 20%

Total = 30%

In the semester final examination 40% marks out of 70% shall be considered as pass marks.

  1. Grading system:

UITS follows the grading system as suggested by the University Grants Commission (UGC) (as given below) for the programs.

  1. Academic Year:

The length of each semester is six months and each academic year consists of 2 (two) semesters (Spring and Autumn). Classes are held within 19 weeks of a semester and 2 weeks are allocated for Examination.

  1. Failed Student:

If a student fails to earn required pass marks in any course or courses or if a student fails to appear at the final examination of the semester after depositing semester tuition fees, he or she shall be treated as a failed student. The failed student shall be allowed to appear in the failed course or courses with the batch that immediately follows as an irregular candidate. The failed student shall not be allowed more than two times to appear in the failed course or courses.

The failed students can also appear at the improvement examination in the courses earning B – (B minus), C + (C plus), C (C regular) and D along with the failed course or courses only once.

  1. Improvement of Grades:

A general student earning B – (B minus), C + (C plus), C (C regular) and D in any course in any semester may choose to improve his/her grade or grades by retaking the same course only once with immediate next batch. If such a student fails to improve his/her grade or grades, the previous grade or grades of the same course shall remain valid.

Department of Social Work

Social work is a helping and an enabling profession. The main purpose of social work is to improve a society’s overall well-being, especially for the most vulnerable populations. Social workers do not limit their work to individuals only; but they also work with families, groups, neighborhoods, communities, and organizations. Social work practice is strengths-based. Social workers assist people or groups identify their problems, determine their skills and capacities, what they are doing well, and how that was accomplished, and then analyze ways that those strengths might be applied to the identified problems.

Although social work is yet to get its professional recognition in Bangladesh, the practice of social work is noticeable in both government and non-government agencies. There are some important areas in Bangladesh where practices social work including medical health setting, psychiatric setting, correctional setting, developmental setting, women and child welfare setting, counseling setting, youth welfare setting, etc. In this connection the Department of Social Work was establised at UITS in 2013 under the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences.

Mission

The mission of the Department is to make social engineers who will enhance human well-being and meet the basic human needs of the people with particular attention to the people who are physically and mentally vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty.
